Spirit and Struggle: Portfolio Number One

Fotovision is pleased to present the first portfolio of its fine-print program for photography lovers to collect signed, museum-quality gelatin-silver prints from acclaimed photographers. Donations support Fotovision’s workshop programming, student scholarships, small documentary photography books and films about world-class photographers.

This first offering is small. A total of only 25 prints of each image is available. There are only 15 full sets available. Each set has with all five signed, gelatin-silver prints on 8" x 10" paper, encased in a handmade portfolio with an end sheet. The remaining images can be collected separately.

Michelle Vignes (French, b. 1928) is a freelance photographer and a former photo editor with UNESCO and Magnum Photos, where she was Henri Cartier Bresson’s assistant. She has received numerous awards, including the Chevalier des Arts des Lettres by France’s Minister of Culture and the Oakland Museum’s Dorothea Lange Award. She is a founder of Fotovision.

Colin H. Finlay (Scottish, b. 1964) is an award-winning editorial and commercial photographer who has traveled the world to document social issues. He has two books: The Unheard Voice: Portraits of Childhood and Testify.

Wayne Miller (American, b. 1918) received two consecutive Guggenheim Fellowships in 1946-1948  and photographed African-Americans in Chicago’s South Side. He taught photography at the Institute of Design in Chicago, and was Edward Steichen’s assistant on the MOMA exhibit, “The Family of Man.” He joined the Magnum photo cooperative in 1958, serving as its president from 1962-1966. Please note: this print has sold out as a single image and is only available in the portfolio.

Matt Herron (American, b. 1931) is a seminal Civil Rights Movement photographer.In the summer of 1964, Herron organized a team of eight photographers, The Southern Documentary Project, in an attempt to record the rapid social change taking place in Mississippi and other parts of the South as civil rights organizations brought northern college students to work in voter registration and education.

Ken Light (American, b. 1951) is a social documentary photographer whose work has appeared in seven books including Delta Time, To The Promised Land, and Coal Hollow as well as in magazines and exhibitions. He is an adjunct Professor and Curator of the Center for Photography at the Graduate School of Journalism at the University of California Berkeley,  and a founder of Fotovision.
